The university is formerly known as Guizhou Institute of Education, which was founded in 1978. In March 2009, upon the approval by Ministry of Education, Guizhou Institute of Education was transformed into a full-time undergraduate university, and renamed Guizhou Education University. In 2013, the university was awarded the qualification of a bachelor's degree awarding unit. In 2016, the university was selected as the construction unit of the "13th Five-Year" Master's Degree awarding project of Guizhou Province. In 2017, it was approved as the construction unit of provincial "double first-class" construction projects. There are 18 schools and 50 undergraduate majors,offering 10 disciplines including economics, law, education, literature, science and engineering. The university has 13,861 full-time students and has formed a multi-level and multi-form talent training system including undergraduate education, postgraduate education, international students' education and continuing education. The faculty team has 1,096 employees in service. Since 2012, the university has undertaken 102 projects at the national level, among them, 50 were funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and 52 were funded by the National Social Science Foundation of China, and 290 projects at the provincial and ministerial level. There are more than 150 crossing research projects, and we have won nearly 50 scientific research achievement awards at or above provincial and ministerial level. The university, upholding the philosophy of open education, has established friendly cooperation with more than 50 universities and educational institutions in the United States, Canada, Thailand, Taiwan and other countries and regions, joined the "International Education Union", "China-Thailand Higher Education Alliance" and China-indonesia Industry-University-Research Alliance. Through overseas internship and exchange of students, visiting training of teachers, education management of overseas students, recruitment of foreign experts and other ways to expand the scope and enrich channels, and constantly deepen international exchanges and cooperation. We have established counterpart relations with universities such as Central China Normal University, and signed cooperation agreement with Langchao Group LTD, education bureaus of various cities (prefectures)in Guizhou Province, People's Government of Wudang District, Guiyang as well as other enterprises, education firms and local governments for cooperation in education. The university is the first "Green University", the first batch of "Civilized Campus" and "Characteristic Culture University" in Guizhou Province, and has the only national "Chinese Education Base" in Guizhou Province. It also has a training center for Administrative Cadres of Education in Guizhou Province, a state-level training base for principals of primary and secondary schools in western China under the Ministry of Education, and a research Center for Chinese Rural Society (Guizhou) under the Ministry of Culture. The university actively serves the teacher education and regional economic and social development in Guizhou, and has trained more than 200,000 teachers and education management cadres for the basic education in Guizhou, making outstanding contributions to the economic and social development of Guizhou, especially the basic education.
學校前身系創建于1978年的貴州教育學院，2009年，經國家教育部批準，改制為全日制普通本科院校；2013年，獲學士學位授予單位資格；2015年，順利通過教育部本科教學工作合格評估；2016年，學校入選為貴州省“十三五”碩士學位授予立項建設單位；2017 年，獲批省級“雙一流”建設項目建設單位。
學?，F有 18個教學單位，50個本科專業，涵蓋經濟學、法學、教育學、文學、理學、工學等10個學科門類，在校全日制學生 13861人，形成了包括本科教育、研究生教育、留學生教育、繼續教育等多層次、多形式的人才培養體系。學校有教職工1096人。2012 年以來，共獲批102項國家級項目，其中國家自然科學基金項目50項，國家社會科學基金項目 52項；省部級科研項目 290余項；橫向項目 150余項；獲省部級以上科研成果獎近50項。
學校堅持開放辦學,先后與美國、英國、加拿大、泰國和臺灣地區等50余所國(境)外高校和教育機構建立了友好合作關系,加入了“國際教育聯盟”、“中泰高等教育聯盟”、“中印尼產學研聯盟”，通過學生海外實習交流、教師訪學培訓、留學生教育管理、外籍專家聘請等方式拓展范圍、豐富渠道，不斷深化交流與合作；與華中師范大學等高校建立了對口幫扶關系；與浪潮集團、貴州省各市（州）教育局、貴陽市烏當區人民政府等企業、教育機構與地方政府等機構簽署合作協議，開展合作教育。
學校為貴州省第一所“綠色大學”、首批“高校文明校園”和“特色文化學?！?，擁有貴州省唯一的國家級“華文教育基地”，并設有貴州省教育行政干部培訓中心、教育部西部地區中小學校長國家級培訓基地和文化部“中國鄉土社會研究中心（貴州）”等機構和平臺。學校主動服務貴州教師教育、服務區域經濟社會發展，為貴州基礎教育培養了20萬余名教師和教育管理干部，為貴州經濟社會發展尤其是基礎教育做出了突出的貢獻。
