SDTBU (originally named China Coal Economics College), affiliated to former Ministry of Coal Industry, was established in 1985. In September 1998, due to the management system reform, it began to be jointly supported by Central Government and Shandong Provincial Government, mainly managed by the latter. In February 2003, it was officially renamed to Shandong Technology and Business University. Facing the sea and surrounded by the mountains, SDTBU is located in Yantai, one of the most charming cities in China. The beautiful scenery on campus has gained SDTBU the high honor of the Provincial Garden-like University and Civilized Campus. SDTBU is also the approved Famous University Characterized by Applied Talents Education in Shandong Province, Demonstration University of Entrepreneurship Education in Shandong Province, the First Test University for the Second Class Transcripts System in Shandong province approved by the Central Youth League and the National Demonstration Base of Entrepreneurship Education in Shandong Province. SDTBU covers an area of 900,900 m2, including a constr uction area of over 626,000 m2. The University library holds 2662,400 volumes. Well-known for Economics, Management and Informatics, it has grown into a multidisciplinary university of finance and economy with a balanced development of Economics, Management, Science, Engineering, Literature and Law. SDTBU has 17 schools, 9 research institutes, 36 research centers, with over 22000 full-time students, including undergraduates and graduates. The university has an overall staff of 1391, including 931 faculty members, 125 of whom are professors and 490 are with Ph.D. SDTBU holds the earliest undergraduate Sino-foreign cooperative educational institution in Shandong Province approved by Ministry of Education—International Business College. SDTBU has established friendly relationships with more than 60 universities in more than 30 countries such as USA, UK, and South Korea. SDTBU strengthens its communication and exchanges with domestic high-level universities such as Peking University and universities in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, conducting cooperation in student education, teacher exchange and academic exchange.
山東工商學院前身中國煤炭經濟學院，始建于1985年，隸屬于原煤炭工業部，1998年9月，劃轉山東省管理。2003年2月更名為山東工商學院，現已發展成為一所以經濟、管理、信息學科見長，經管理工文法多學科協調發展的省屬財經類大學。
學校坐落在美麗的海濱城市——煙臺，依山臨海，風景秀麗，占地90.9萬平方米，建筑面積62.6萬平方米。學校是博士學位授予培育建設單位、山東省應用型本科高校立項建設單位、山東省應用型人才培養特色名校立項建設單位、省級創業教育示范校。
現有17個二級院（部），全日制在校本科生、研究生、留學生22000余人。教職工1391人，其中教授125人，博士490人。
學校設有教育部批準的山東省最早的本科中外合作辦學機構——山東工商學院國際商學院，與美國莫瑞州立大學合作辦學，實施雙學位教育。學校是國家留學基金委“高等學校青年骨干教師出國研修項目”合作院校，具有外國留學生招生資格和港澳臺地區招收本科生資格。學校先后與美國、英國、德國、韓國、泰國等20多個國家的60多所高校建立了合作關系，與國內高水平大學、科研院所在學生培養、教師互派、學術交流等方面開展合作。
