Guilin Tourism University, formerly known as Guilin Institute of Tourism, was founded in 1985. In 2015, it was upgraded to Guilin Tourism University (GTU), which is one of the earliest independent full-time public tourism undergraduate universities in China. The university now has two campuses, Yanshan campus and Canluan Campus, covering a total area of 1.25 million square meters (1,885 mu), with more than 12,000 full-time students. The university is the key supporting unit of the United Nations World Tourism Organization and its affiliated member unit of the Education Committee, the educational member unit of the Asia-Pacific Tourism Association, the China-Asean Tourism Talents Education and Training Base, and the initiator of the "Five Star Alliance" of China's tourism colleges and universities. It ranked first in the "Top 10 Most Popular Domestic Tourism Colleges and Universities in the Hospitality Industry" conducted by the prestigious magazine "Hotelier".
桂林旅游學院創辦于1985年，原名桂林旅游?？茖W校，1994年定名為“桂林旅游高等?？茖W?！?，2015年經教育部批準升格為普通本科高等學校，2021年成為廣西壯族自治區人民政府、文化和旅游部共建高校，是我國兩所獨立建制全日制公辦旅游本科院校之一。學?，F有雁山、驂鸞兩個校區，校園總面積125.72萬平方米（1885畝），全日制在校生12000多人。
學校是聯合國世界旅游組織在中國大陸設定的唯一重點支持單位及其教育委員會附屬成員單位、世界旅游聯盟會員單位、亞洲開發銀行“高端旅游人才培訓優秀合作伙伴”、中國旅游院?！拔逍锹撁恕眴挝?，是中國-東盟旅游人才教育培訓基地、中國旅游研究院東盟旅游研究基地的載體單位，是中國-東盟旅游教育聯盟（CATEA）發起院校及其秘書長單位，是國家級專業技術人員繼續教育基地，是唯一獲“全國旅游扶貧培訓基地”的高校，是全國研學旅行指導師培訓基地、首批港澳青少年游學基地，是廣西旅游產業人才小高地、廣西旅游數據中心、廣西紅色文化與旅游研究基地載體單位和廣西博士后創新實踐基地。
