Founded in 1922, Yunnan University is one of the earliest comprehensive universities in Southwest China. In 1946, Yunnan University was listed by Concise Encyclopedia Britannica as one of the 15 world's famous universities in China. In 1978, it was ranked by the State Council as one of the 88 national key universities. Since the reform and opening-up, Yunnan University has made huge progress. In 1996, it was among the first universities to win the membership of "Project 211". In 2017, it became one of 42 universities that qualified for the Double First-Rate Program, an initiative to develop world-class universities and disciplines. In 2018, it was listed as one of 14 universities in central and western China to be primarily administered by the Ministry of Education, with the local provincial government helping to develop it. Yunnan University has now gathered a galaxy of talents in liberal arts, science, law, technology, economics, agriculture, medicine, business administration, and fine arts, and has developed into a modern university featuring ethnology, biology, resource development and environmental protection, borderland research, and Southeast Asia and South Asia research.

云南大學始建于1922年，是中國西部邊疆最早建立的綜合性大學之一。1946年，《不列顛百科全書》將云南大學列為中國15所在世界最具影響的大學之一。1978年，云南大學被國務院確定為全國88所重點大學之一。改革開放后，云南大學獲得了長足的進步。1996年首批列入國家“211工程”重點建設大學，2017年成為國家首批42所“一流大學”建設高校之一，2022年，繼續入選第二輪國家“雙一流”建設高校。學校形成了以民族學、生態學、生物學、特色資源開發與環境保護，以及邊疆問題和東南亞、南亞國際問題研究為優勢特色，學科較為齊全，人才密集的綜合性大學。

云南大學下設27個學院、10個研究機構、1個附屬醫院，設有研究生院?，F有教職員工3000余人（不包括附屬醫院），教學科研人員中具有博士學位的近1500余人。學校有全日制本科學生17000人，碩士研究生12000人，博士研究生1500人，學歷教育國際學生近1500人。

學校與國際上100多所高校和機構開展合作交流。建有覆蓋東南亞、南亞、西亞、非洲和“一帶一路”沿線國家較為完備的區域國別研究體系和“一帶一路”沿線國家相關數據庫，有8個教育部備案區域國別研究中心。作為永久秘書長單位發起成立涵蓋16個南亞東南亞國家120余所高校的“南亞東南亞大學聯盟”。留學生生源國數量達70個，基本實現南亞東南亞國家全覆蓋，是中國面向南亞東南亞重要的留學生培養基地。在伊朗、孟加拉和緬甸共建有4所海外孔子學院，設有“一帶一路南亞東南亞國家漢語推廣基地”。
